Overview

History

The Department of Radiology in the College of Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville was founded in 1964 under the leadership of John Reaves, the department’s first chairman. Since its inception, imaging and information technology has changed in ways that were unthinkable to our founding members. As a pioneer of PACS technology, we were early adopters of digital image utilization and went completely film-less in the late 1990s. We also transitioned from transcriptionists to voice recognition in the late 1990s and now utilize Powerscribe 360 throughout all of our reading rooms. In 2013, we integrated our PACS system, Powerscribe voice recognition and Radiant RIS with the newly implemented Epic electronic medical record system. We recently transitioned to the Visage PACS system and have been impressed by its speed and functionality. These integrated systems are used throughout all of the inpatient and outpatient care facilities of the UF Health system. Though our technology and size have changed over the years, our goals remain unchanged – provide excellent resident education while delivering outstanding patient care.
